Power Assisted Liposuction

PAL (Power-Assisted Liposuction) Product Animation from Dr. Ishoo on Vimeo.

Liposuction can be performed using one of several different techniques. One of these is power liposuction, sometimes also called Power-Assisted Liposuction (PAL). With power liposuction, Dr. Ishoo uses the aid of a power-assisted cannula to remove fat cells with more controlled, gentler vibrations compared to the vigorous motions needed during manual liposuction. Many surgeons and their patients prefer the more precise results that power liposuction delivers.

BENEFITS OF POWER LIPOSUCTION

The essentials of all forms of liposuction come down to one thing: removing fat cells from problem areas of the body. Power liposuction uses the same essential method as tumescent liposuction: a solution is injected to break up fat cells and minimize patient discomfort. Then, the solution and fat cells are removed with gentle suction. The difference in power liposuction comes in when looking at the type of cannula that’s used during the removal process.

The surgeons at Boston Cosmetic Specialists perform power assisted liposuction using a special cannula that’s motor powered to produce rapid, tiny vibrations. The rapid vibrations of the cannula tip quickly loosen fat cells for easier removal. Since the fat deposits are broken up more efficiently with the assistance of the vibrating power, a smaller cannula can be used as well. This translates into less noticeable incisions for the patient, which are another benefit of power-assisted liposuction.

The pulsating motion of the cannula breaks up fat cells in a more uniform way compared to the manual movements of the surgeon that are necessary during traditional liposuction. Your surgeon will also be able to remove a greater amount of fat cells in a shorter period of time with power lipo, yet with less force than would be required with manual liposuction. Surgeons also enjoy a higher level of precision when using power liposuction compared to other techniques, which allows for more direct targeting of specific areas with less trauma to surrounding tissues. This means a smoother procedure for surgeons, and a faster recovery for patients.

ABOUT THE PROCEDURE

Your surgeon will begin by making small incisions near the area to be treated. These are very small, just large enough to allow the cannula to pass through. After surgery is completed, the incisions shouldn’t even require stitches, and should heal up to nearly invisible.

Next, Dr. Ishoo will prepare the special solution that’s injected into the body to help break up the fat cells. Part of this solution contains lidocaine, a local anesthetic that keeps you comfortable throughout the procedure and into your initial recovery stages. Another additive will constrict the blood vessels in the area to prolong the effectiveness of the anesthetic, as well as minimize blood loss.

Once the solution has saturated the target area, your surgeon will use the cannula to suction out the mixture of solution and unwanted fat cells. Throughout the process, the tip of the cannula will vibrate rapidly, further breaking up the fatty deposits to facilitate their removal.

From start to finish, the entire procedure takes about an hour or two, depending on the level of correction that’s needed. Power liposuction is generally performed as an outpatient procedure, so you should be able to return home the very same day.

AFTER THE PROCEDURE

The special solution used during your liposuction will ensure that you stay comfortable into the early stages of the recovery process. Since a general anesthesia isn’t necessary, you shouldn’t have to remain overnight after your appointment, and can instead return home to enjoy your recovery in comfortable surroundings.

Since so little manual force is required during power liposuction, patients often find that bruising and tenderness are greatly reduced and, subsequently, their recovery is faster. However, even power-assisted liposuction patients will notice some bruising and swelling initially. These will dissipate within the first week or two; wearing a compression garment that reduces swelling and encourages your body to conform to its new contours will further benefit your healing process.

POWER LIPOSUCTION RESULTS

Research studies have shown that power liposuction is capable of removing approximately 30 percent more fat compared to manual methods, while at the same time minimizing bruising and promoting a faster recovery time. The procedure also takes less time overall, which further reduces the chances of complications during surgery. Power lipo is particularly useful for sculpting areas that have been more difficult in the past using traditional methods, such as the male breasts. Since the removal of fat cells is permanent, you should enjoy a slimmer, smoother silhouette after the results of your power liposuction.
