Back and Body Acne

Unfortunately, acne is not relegated to just your face. While 92 percent of people with acne have facial acne, 60 percent have back acne and even chest acne. Having acne on your back and chest is a sign that your acne is more likely to be severe.Because acne occurs in a pore — a hair follicle and its attached oil gland — it can happen almost anywhere on your body, that has oil-secreting glands or hair follicles. The ears, neck, chest, back, scalp, shoulders and buttocks have the greatest density of pores, making them fertile grounds for acne. The same hormones, plugged pores and proliferation of bacteria that produce acne on your face are at play with body acne.

This means acne can form anywhere except the palms of hands and feet as these are the only two areas on the body that do not have sebaceous glands, the glands responsible for the production of sebum, oil and hair follicles where acne is formed. Chest, shoulder or back acne, sometimes called “bacne”, is more common in physically active individuals. It can be worsened by constant rubbing from shoulder straps and athletic equipment. Severe cystic acne on the torso is generally more common in males and tends to scar easily.

This difference between facial and body acne, means the way in which we treat infected areas should also differ. ‘Bacne is very similar to facial acne in its symptoms and causes, but the treatment of it does differ. ‘The skin on your back has larger pores than facial pores which means they are far more likely to become clogged, it’s best to look for treatment protocols that are specifically designed for the body to treat bacne’.

Generally speaking, the same treatments that work on facial acne are used by most practitioners for body acne. Dr Edwin Ishoo has developed special protocols to deal with body acne, which can be particularly troublesome. Cystic, scarring acne frequently needs more aggressive prescription treatments to bring it under control.

If you are suffering from back and body acne and want to learn more about Dr. Ishoo’s protocol for effective management, contact Boston Cosmetic Specialists for a detailed, complementary consultation and treatment plan.
