Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

Is PRP treatment a safe procedure?

The good news is that PRP injections couldn’t be any safer. Since they use the patient’s own cells to increase collagen, keratin and new blood cell production, the only risk is slight bruising. This side effect varies with each individual, but even if there is bruising, there is no downtime required for patients in the Boston and South Shore Areas. Since Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy is pain-free, it’s an excellent option for sensitive patients. We use the Arteriocyte system, which is a sealed and sterile centrifuge chamber that is specifically designed for harvesting PRP with no chance of contamination or infection.

What are the benefits of receiving PRP injections?

  • No drains
  • Better flap adhesion
  • A shortened recovery time
  • Improved and more efficient healing
  • Less hematoma, swelling, seroma and scarring

What are the applications of PRP with popular cosmetic procedures?

  • Face lift
  • Eyelid and eyelift procedures
  • Tummy tuck
  • Natural breast augmentation
  • Laser skin resurfacing
  • Acne scar resurfacing
  • Brazilian butt lift
  • Acne scar treatment
  • Crow’s feet
  • Treating forehead lines
  • Wrinkles on the neck
  • Dark circles and bags under the eyes
  • Volume loss in the cheeks
  • Reduction of smile lines
  • Improving of lip and frown lines
  • Drooping skin around the jaw line

What are the contraindications associated with PRP?

There are very few. However, patients with bleeding disorders or hematologic diseases do not qualify for this procedure. Discuss any existing medical conditions with your surgeon to find out if PRP is right for you.

How many PRP sessions are needed to achieve results?

The number of sessions necessary to achieve noticeable results will depend upon the desired effect and the tissue being targeted. Dr. Edwin Ishoo recommends for facial rejuvenation, one treatment every 4 to 6 weeks for the first 3 months, and one treatment every 3 months for the following year. After that year, we recommend following a maintenance schedule every 6 months to maintain the best results and to prevent premature aging.

What does treatment involve?

We collect a blood sample from the patient and the blood is placed into a state-of-the-art centrifuge that is specifically designed by Arteriocyte to enrich plasma with the patient’s own platelets. Platelet rich plasma is collected and treated before it is delivered through the injection.

When can I expect to see improvement after PRP treatment?

Patients can see visible improvement within three weeks and improvement continues over the next several months as new collagen and keratin are laid beneath the skin, and results can last up to 2 years. The PRP treatment itself takes between 60 and 90 minutes; however, to achieve the best results we recommend treatments spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart.

Who is a candidate for PRP treatment?

Those who desire to add volume to their skin, or who want to reduce fine lines or improve their skin’s texture but want to avoid plastic surgery are ideal candidates for PRP therapy. Although the results of PRP treatment aren’t as permanent as a surgical procedure, patients can expect to enjoy an improved appearance for about 18 months. Patients will typically receive a series of PRP treatments at regular intervals to obtain the greatest benefits from PRP therapy.
